Counting By 7s

Recently I have read the book ‘Counting By 7’s written by Holly Goldberg Sloan. When I started reading the book it took me a while to understand what was going on around the main characters but my mind soon came around to what was happening. The main plot of the story is of a girl named Willow who is adopted and later something tragic happens to her new parents. After joining a new school, the teachers sense something suspicious going on with her so she is sent to a counsellor to overcome a problem.

Later in the book, Willow meets new friends called Mai and Quang-Ha who are brother and sister that have problems of their own to overcome. Willow seems to have a big positive impact on the people around her, which ends up leading a taxi driver to take on his education again. She then ends up living temporarily with some unexpected people which turns out to be the dream life for her! But soon the dream comes to an end and she has to leave and move on for the third time. The ending of this book is a bit of a plot twist which will surprise the reader.

This book is very different to other books I have read and has an enjoyable story line. The only part which I didn’t enjoy was that the chapters changed from third person to first person continuously and began to be a bit confusing. But some writers prefer to show the different points of the story from other views and not just the main characters.

Over all, my opinion on this book is that it does make you think about different people’s lives and their problems which you wouldn’t expect. I would recommend this book to the ages 10+ because it has an interesting meaning with a good, easy story to follow. I’d give this book a comment of ‘Definitely worth reading!’
