Spy For The Queen Of Scotts

Spy For The Queen Of Scots is a novel set in sixteenth century France and Scotland about Mary Queen Of Scots’ lady-in-waiting, Ginette. After overhearing an assassination plot ordered by Catherine De Medici, the mother of Mary’s future husband, Francis, she turns spy for Mary. All the while fighting her ever growing feelings for the charismatic young nobleman, Sir Duncan Alexander.

I read this book in two days, I was unable to put it down. The plot was deliciously fast paced although you were never confused of where you were or what had just happened, the characters were believable and the plot thickened with every page. From Ginette and Mary playing as teenagers, to having to move back to Scotland because Mary’s life was at stake, every page kept me enthralled and excited to know what would happen next.

I would recommend this book strongly to anybody who likes romance novels, history (particularly the Tudor period) or just looking for a good read whose characters will stay with you long after you've turned the last page.

Spy For The Queen Of Scotts

This book is a historical fiction novel set in the times when Mary queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth were alive. To really understand this story you have to know a bit about history. For example, you have to know that there was a lot of civil unrest at the time. The Scots, the French and the English all hated each other. The newly formed Church of England split the land in two with Catholics and Protestants against each other. There were also a lot of people in the court trying to advance themselves.

With this book set in such difficult times it makes it a very interesting read. You never really know who to trust and who is good and who is bad. You have to sit through intense battles of politics each trying to score points from the other in “the right courtly fashion.” There is plenty of scheme and intrigue.

You see this time in history from the point of view of one of Mary’s closest advisers; you watch her try to protect her queen and see a strong bond form between her and a certain special fellow, but is he really to be trusted?

This book is very good however it is quite slow to get going and is not everyone’s cup of tea. This book is a slow burner you need to be patient, there are no explosions in the first few minutes so if you like fast paced action move along (Good fast paced action book read “the End Game”). The plot is also quite hard to follow because there are many characters whose motives are difficult to discover. You need to really concentrate on what you are reading. If you do this, then you should love this book because it is unusual and different from other books aimed at young adults.
